Remson, J.V. 1975 Greater Roadrunner Geococcyx californianus Sep.15 Scotty's Castle, Death Valley NM, Inyo Co., Calif: I seen stalking and lunging at f Brown-headed Coubird. The roadrunner walked across a parking lot and crouched behind a parking lot cement barrier 20' from two &/imm Brown-headed Coubirds that were foraging on a lawn. It remained thus for ~1 min and then moved 2 ft. forward and crouched behind a clump of grass, intently watching the coubirds. I got out of the car and circled around behind the coubirds to try to shepherd them towards the roadrunner. I moved [illegible] coubirds to within ~8' of the motionless roadrunner, but one took alarm (I believe of me not roadrunner) and flew off. The other stayed still watching me. The roadrunner moved slightly to raise itself and then dashed out across the grass at the coubird and lunged at it with its bill as the coubird flew off and escaped. The speed of the roadrunners dash was astounding and it just missed the coubird. Nov.16 Mines Rd - Del Puerto Cyn, Santa Clara Co., Calif: I flushed in extensive chaparral about 200 yds. e. of cattle guard at "San Antonio Junction 1/2 mile" sign.
