Remsen, J.V. 1975 Western Sandpiper Calidris mauri Apr. 16 Alameda Beach, Alameda Co., Calif: one seen to run up to and butt a Dunlin, which bounced back into deeper water. One was also see to pursue a fly by running along the beach about 1/2 meter and the grasp of the bird then lunging into the air to grab it. However, the fly escaped, but flew out and landed on the water surface 2 m. from shore. The sandpiper waded in after it up to its chest (1/2 m), hesitated, and then appeared to swim out to the fly. Just as it got to the fly, however, it flew away, whereupon the sandpiper flew out of the water and back to shore.
