Piping Plover
Charadrius melodus
May 10 Jumbo Res., Logan Co., Colo.: 1 at State Wildlife Area s. of reservoir.
Seen only briefly (10 sec.) but at very close range (40'). Very much like
Semipalmated Plover except back and head coloration very pale like a
Snowy Plover and no dark area behind the eye; one dark bar
through crown connecting eyes; in flight as it flew away from us the
single dark spot on the tail and white rump (both Semipalmated and
in flight
snowy have dark rump) were seen very clearly; call note a double
"poip-poip" unlike Semipalmated's "chu-peep"; black rings
(complete) on breast and pale legs eliminates Snowy, as well as
thick stumpy bill with pale base, dark tip. Very few good records
for Colorado
Sep. 7 Jumbo Res., Logan Co., Colo: 1 on n. shore of Jumbo Res. Studied
for 15 min. in perfect light on wide mud flat feeding with Semipalmated
Plovers. Same size and shape as Semipalmateds but much, much pale -
stood out with the naked eye from a distance. Bill short and stubby,
(perhaps more so than Semipalmated) and dark; complete breast band but
very faint; legs yellow. In flight, rump and upper tail white, lower
tail with black spot.
