Purple Finch
Carpodacus purpureus
Jan. 11 Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co, Calif: 2
Feb. 19 Univ. of Calif., Berkeley, Alameda Co, Calif - 1 h.o.
singing vigorously - first songs I've heard on campus
this spring
Mar. 22 Alice Eastwood Campg, Marin Co, Calif : 15 - continual
din of song, high density
Apr. 4 Univ. of Calif: 1 giving call very similar to loud 'tew' note of Evening Grosbeak - same call heard at this
time last year and year before.
Dec. 28 Barr Lalle to Muir Sags, Colo.: 95% confident of 2 ??,
(and 1 ? seen simultaneously by J. Reddall) flushed from
a weed patch and seen poorly flying away. I
heard the birds calling before I saw them and
immediately called out "Purple Finches" - I then
got my glasses on 2 ?? and all I could see
were that they were either Purple or Cassin's but flanks
were very heavily streaked like Purple. J.Reddall had
the ?? and were impressed with its wine color and amount
of red on the back. But we just didn't get @ anything
but poor looks, JR and SL also said that Cassins
were very scarce this year, even in the mountains.
