Remsen, J.V. 1974 Bobolink Dolichonyx oryzivorus May 26 Furnace Creek Ranch, Death Valley, NM, Inyo Co, Calif: 2♂♂ together on wire with ♀. The song has elements similar to flight song of W.Meadowlark, and one of its call notes, a deep chuck, is definitely blackbird-like – I can now see more why the bird is an Icterid. Today I performed one of those feats of hearing ability which one would like to brag about to everyone but can't for modesty reasons. My only witness was Sadie Brown. As we were approaching to within 100 yds of one of the small ponds at the NW corner of the golf course I heard a faint rendition of a song and before the bird was through, I said to Sadie, "I think I hear a Bobolink!". About 15 sec. later, Bruce Broadbents, who was way up ahead of us at the pond yells out, "Hey there's a Bobolink here!". Not bad for the distance, but what even amazed myself is that I had only once ever heard a Bobolink before – about a year ago today at the same place.
