American Dipper
Cinclus mexicanus
Jan.25 Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif.: 1 in
the artificially rocky stream bed going through
the Botanical Gardens. This bird was found
in early December by Joe Morlan. It may
be an immature, since it is very brown-headed
and its entire lower mandible is dull yellow.
Bill Principe and I flushed it up the
stream bed to see what it would do when it
ran out of the stream, which ended (began)
in a culvert under the road. The bird flew
into the culvert (diameter ~ 5 ft) through
to the other side of the road.
Feb.3 Tilden Park: 1 at same place in Botanical
Gardens. Seen with Dick Erickson, Tom Schuytenberg, Joel Greenber
Feb.6 Tilden Park: 1 still at Botanical Gardens. Seen
with Kim Garrett, Russell Greenberg, Barry Sauppe,
Rich Stallcup.
Apr.26 Boca Dam, Nevada Co., Calif.: 1 singing full song in
stream above dam.
