Remsen, J.V. 1974 Scrub Jay Aphelocoma coerulescens Jan.5 Coyote Hills Reg.Park, Alameda Co, Calif: 1 Apr.5 301 Camino Pablo, Orinda, Contra Costa Co, Calif : I chased two Mourning Doves, making three specific attacks ; the first two dives, flying directly at the doves, succeeded in making them fly to other trees. The last attack seen resulting in their flying out of sight, with the Scrub Jay still in pursuit. May 24 San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles Co, Calif : I attacked a Peromyscus spp. as it was walking across a paved highway. The mouse appeared somewhat slow and weak, and it was unusual in itself to see one walking in the open on a hot sunny afternoon (~1400). The Scrub Jay attempted to pick it up several times but the mouse got away each time (~3) - then a car came along, the jay flew and the mouse returned to the brush on the side of the road from which it came. It was a very grayish Peromyscus, thus probably a young one; it was larger than maniculatus, smaller than californicus.
