Remsen, J.V. 1974 Common Poorwill Phalaenoptilus nuttalli Apr.19 Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif: I seen plus another heard in Big Springs area. Bonnie Bowen had reported seeing them here the night before. This is the first time I'd ever attracted a goatsucker to within sight by imitations, despite numerous attempts with Poor-wills and Whip-poor-wills before. After about 2015, one bird called back and forth with me for 15 min. and then suddenly came close and landed on a dead diagonal branch of a bush not 30' in front of us for about 10 seconds. I had never heard of a poor-will landing in a bush before. It then flew around us and alighted on the fire trail in front of us, where it stayed for 15 sec. while we got the light on it and got good views. Then it flew farther down the trail (75') and stayed for another 15 sec. with the light on it. It then disappeared and did not come close again, despite much calling back and forth, except for once more about a half-hour late, but we were unable to find it with the light. The habitat was mainly grassy slopes with just a few small rocks. This area has had Poorwills before, and I believe a torpid one was found here one winter. May 14 Tilden Park: 1 h.o. same spot as above but would not (come toward) respond to imitations, perhaps because it was a cold and windy evening. May 26 Westgard Pass, Inyo Co., Calif: 2 seen while night driving
