Saw-whet Owl
Aegolius acadicus
Feb.6 (cont)
the birds more wary -- they would not approach as closely as two nights ago. Weather conditions were identical except much colder - cold may also have been a factor
Feb.24
San Pablo Creek, Orinda, Contra Costa Co., Calif.: 1 h.o.
First, one heard at a great distance giving several series of toots, apparently in response to our imitations. Then nothing was heard for ~ 10 minutes, and then the cat-like wail was heard twice about 100 yds away.
After about 10 minutes of imitations with no response, the cat-wail was heard 3-4 times within 25 yds.
No further response despite ~ 20 minutes of imitations
Apr.19
Tilden Park, Contra Costa Co., Calif.: 1 seen briefly.
Responded to imitations [I had been giving out a variety of owl and goatsucker calls, including saw-whet, not really expecting to get any response, when suddenly it began to call], dive bombing us twice - it came as close as 3 ft to our faces. I got the light on it for a second as it was perched, but it flew off before we could get our binoculars on it. It called back and forth to us on and off for ~ 15 min. It seemed strange to find one in a Eucalyptus grove although there was a row of small, (15') dense conifers which looked like a good roosting grove.
Joe Morlan said this was the same area he found two birds in on Dec.16,1973. (Oakland Christmas Count)
