Remsen, J.V. 1974 Pygmy Owl glaucidium gnoma May 17 Tassajara Rd., Monterey Co, Calif - I h.o. plus 1 seen. The heard only bird only gave about 4 toots and was heard at the crest of Tassajara Rd at Chew's Ridge. The other bird was lured into view at 1100 by my imitations a couple of miles s. of Jamesburg. When the bird first appeared it was mobbed viciously by Black-headed Grosbeaks and it stayed in the densest parts of the trees. However, after about 15 minutes, they lost interest, and while it was still harassed and scolded by Solitary Vireos, Orange-crowned Warblers, and Oregon Juncos, it was not physically attacked; the grosbeaks were actually seen to strike the owl in flight. It finally came very close (40') and near the ground (10-20') and we got incredible views through the telescope. It was very excited by my imitations and called back, giving a whistled "toot" in a series with intervals of 1-2 seconds. When it would fly in my direction it would give a whistled chatter.
