Remsen, J.V. 1974 Thayer's Gull Larus thayeri Jan.26 Monterey Bay offshore boat trip, Monterey Co., Calif : I first-year bird which was probably this species was following the boat. It was pale like an imm. Glaucous-winged, but smaller, thinner-billed , and with darker wing-tips . Mantle was me had conspicuous white feather edgings giving it a checkleed pattern like some imm. Ring-billeds and Mew Gulls . Feb.2 Monterey Bay offshore boat trip : I ad. circled thf boat very close - pure white undersides to wing tips (some gray tinge) , dark eye - otherwise similar to Herring but slightly smaller. Feb.9 Eastern Contra Costa Co., Calif : 1ad. with Herrings at Antioch Munic. Res. - like Herrings but slightly smaller, dark eye, underwing tips mostly white with some darkl gray on extreme tips . I imm.-on Contra Loma Res - like imm. Herrings but smaller, shorter-headed, wing-tips not dark. Nov.28 Monterey area: I first yer - all buffy like Glaucons- winged butt smaller, and with slimmer, smaller all dark bill.
