Glaucoous-winged Gull
Larus glaucescens
Jan.5 Monterey Penin, Monterey Co., Calif: 35
Jan.25 Alameda South Shore, Alameda Co., Calif : 1 adult
with a plastic canned-drink six-pack hoide stuck
on its neck. It had apparently stuck its head
through one of the six holes, gotten it over its
head and around its neck, and was unable to
remove it. The bird's mandibles were parted,
as apparently the plastic collar was constricting
its breathing. [drawing] - plastic
Another adult was observed going through
what was apparently a courting routine with an
adult Western Gull; both birds faced each
other and threw back their heads simultaneously,
giving a loud series of calls in the process; then
the head and bill were thrown forward and
then back again. Later both birds walked in
a rigid manner side by side in the same direction
