Reimsen, J.V. 1973 Ruff Philomachus pugnax Nov.26 Martinez, Contra Costa Co., Calif: 1♂ (size of Greater Yellowlegs) in a marshy area - flooded field at the SE intersection of I-680 and Waterfront Rd. where it has been seen off and on since Sept. Field medium-length (shorter than Tringa) marks: bright orange legs; relatively short bill with pale base; white ovals on rump in flight; scaly brown back; speckled or mottled brown chest, paler buffy below. Silent. Waded up to belly in marsh, often probing like a dunitcher - in addition to foraging along shore and pecking here and there like a Tringa.
