Sandhill Crane
Antigone canadensis
Feb. 16 Los Banos WMA, Merced Co, Calif : 75
Feb. 17 Calif. Valley-Carrizo Plain, San Luis Obispo Co, Calif -
39 circled in a thermal until at a very high elevation and then flew N.
Hwy. 58, Simmler to McKittrick, Kern Co, Calif : 39,
undoubtedly the same flock seen earlier in the day, flying NE.
Feb. 18 San Luis NWR, Merced Co, Calif : 400 . Some dancing.
Two birds apparently engaged in a courting flight--
One bird gave a more rapid, louder series of
flight calls than normal in flight as it joined
another lone flying bird. It then flew with its
wings arched upwards and stiffened for 30 seconds
very close to the other bird. They continued in normal
flight, but still very close together, out of sight.
