Bald Eagle
Haliaeetus leucocephalus
Feb. 17 Calif. Valley-Carrizo Plain, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif:
1; soaring with 2 Golden Eagles on a salt bush
plain, gradually climbing up with a thermal
and moving north. This or another bird was
seen 3-4 miles n. of this spot 15 minutes
later. This was a good opportunity to study the
differences in shape between the two eagles -
Bald has much greater proportion of its body in
front of its wings and less behind - it has a
shorter, broader tail, broader wings, and a conspicuous
larger, more hooked bill - the latter was visible at
hundreds of yards.
Tiern NWR, Tiern Co., Calif: 2; in view at once,
both moving north.
Dec. 28 Barr Lake to Muir Sgs, Colo: 5q 2i lu in Muir Sgs-
