These are the only ones I've seen this year so far - seem to be very scarce this winter. Feb. 16 Santa Fe Grade, Merced Co, Calif: 300 Feb. 17 Kern NWR, Kern Co, Calif: 200 Feb. 18 Santa Fe Grade: 350. The quack of this species is a nasal, strained explosive series of about 3-4 quacks, descending in pitch, higher pitched than other quacks, almost snipe-like.
