Remsen, J.V. 1974 Short-tailed Shearwater Puffinus tenuirostris (cont) Feb. 2 Moss Landing on the way out and one more sickly bird about 5 miles off Moss Landing on the way back in. In contrast to last week, we got really excellent, prolonged views of birds flying past the boat at 100' or less, exposing pale but smoky- brown, not flashy white, underwings. The bill was noticeably short, the wings more narrow and arched backwards, and flight faster. The bird on the way back in was probably sick since it only flew weakly when approached to within 25 feet. In addition to a short bill, the nape, crown, and back were an ashy blackish-gray, not the [illegible] tawnier brown of Scotty. This can be seen in many skins at MV2. This overall dullness could be seen on 2 of the other 4 Short-taileds in flight. short-tailed Scott short-tailed
