Remsen, J.V. 1974 Short-tailed Shearwater Puffinus tenuirostris Jan. 26 Monterey Bay offshore boat trip, J. Monterey Co., Calif: I was never 100% positive of the identification, but we probably had at least 2 and possibly as many as 8 of this species. The two birds I was most certain about were one which flew very near the boat whose very narrow, arched wings were conspicuous, along with a short bill. I couldn't see the underwings very well but they appeared to be without any pale lining. The other bird I saw had definitely uniform pale brown underwings- no trace of pale underwings. The other individuals I saw were no typical Sootys if they weren't Short-tailed - although the underwings weren't completely uniform brown, they certainly lacked the conspicuous pale flashings of the Sooty. They had some pale areas in the secondaries, but were uniform brown in primaries ? Short-tailed typical Sooty typical Sooty Feb. 2 Monterey Bay offshore boat trip, Monterey Co., Calif: 5 birds of which I was 100% positive (as well as everyone else on the boat) - 4 were 10-15 mile W. of
