Yellow-billed Loon
Gavia adamsii
Dec. 1
Nov. 29
Pt. Reyes area, Marin Co., Calif: 1 in middle of Tomales Bay, located from Shields Study area in Inverness (known to be present for a week or so)
The bird's appearance was different enough from Common Loon to standout at a distance of 1½-2 miles through the telescope (later observed at much closer range). Pale yellow bill, apparently with a straight culmen, longer than Common bill, and with some dark smudging on base of upper mandible; neck and head very pale and mottled in comparison with Common Loon; striking dark patch in auricular area - conspicuous at a great distance; overall larger than Common Loon and paler-backed.
Observed for over ½ hour!
