Cedar Grove, 3. Fork Kings R., 4,600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif.
May 27, 1942
Followed the trail back just beyond the Roaring
River Falls. On the way I caught one Scaclaptra,
which I safely tucked into my bag. I caught
another & was surprised to see him turn &
snap at me. Investigation showed that he had
four ticks in back of his left ear & 3 (buried
deep) in back of his right ear. I wanted to
get the ticks out without hurting them & so
did not put him into the bag. The result was
that I lost both birds & ticks.
Got back to the car at 3:40 p.m. &
came straight back to camp.
After dinner Mr. Orion Dole us down
to the hotel Beck region where J. Crowley &
I set 21 traps. On the way down, I stopped
& found the Robin still sitting on her nest
We went to the house [illegible] & met a family of people who
were temporarily in charge there. Came back to camp at
8:00 p.m. or so and then fixed lights & wrote notes
for awhile.
