Calliope Hummingbird
E. Fork Sheep Creek, 5500 ft., Kings R. Canyon, Fresno C., Calif.
June 1, 1942
Appeared in oak near nest tree. Perched in sun—
light and preened, scratched, fanned tail
etc. I was not watching as she entered
nest, but I looked barely 2 seconds after
and I feel sure she had not time to
feed young. Left nest after a minute.
Reappeared for a second then left nest
again returned to feed young. I left at this
time.
June 2, 1942
Arrived at nest about 7:50 a.m. and
saw that bird was off the nest. She appeared
at 7:54 and flew directly onto the nest,
without feeding young. Faced N.E. (I was
sitting somewhere N.E. of her). Left nest after about
5 minutes. Gone 8 min. — Flew directly into
nest upon her return—did not feed her
young. Faced N.E. again. Weather here cloudy
and rather cold now. Sun set up her
right. Left after about 10 min. I returned in 2 min.
To feed young. Fed first one & then the other;
each was fed three times. Alight again onto
nest on which she stayed barely a minute &
then she flew off to the S.W. Faced
S.E. while on shortest this time.
