M. Ridg, 1942 Calliope Hemmingley E. Fork Sheep Creek, 5500 ft, Kriips R Canyon, Tson C, Ariz. June 1, 1942 10:50 - Feeling young from S. side & sat facing N.W. Stayed on nest 9 min., & then flew off- N.W. & up. Disappeared reappeared a few minutes later. Might have gone in, but some people came up the trail & she again disappeared. Dust at 11:10 in alder, wiping her beak. Came to nest. West side this time & fed young; faster = much stronger, head & beaks easily visible as she feeds them. There was an interruption, and I lost track of her for a while. When she returned, she sat on the nest for a time facing NW and several times I saw her move her wings thought she were stilling them. & ruffle them up 2 or 3 times. She left the nest & at 11:45 I saw her sitting in the alder vigorously preening; preateling; wiping her bill, forming the tail, etc. A minute or so later she was on the usual edge of the nest, feeling her nestlings, almost all of whose heads were visible. Settled on nest facing S.E. Left nest again for a while. Returned without feeding young - faced S.E. On nest 4 min. - Flew off in a wide arc which finally directed her NW again.
