Calliope Hummingbird
E. Fork Sheep Creek, 5,500 ft., Kings R. Campground, Fresno Co, Calif
May 31, 1942
Stayed away & minutes. Upon her return, she perched
on edge and fed nestlings again. Again came
just a several fatal looking plunges downwards,
then she raised her beak above horizontal,
dropped it again & looked from side to side
constantly. Selecting now the mouth full
to her right, she again proceeded to pump &
join. Then she slid into the nest, facing
East & looked around a little; gave a
few side to side jerks, left the horn. Stayed
away about 3 min. & was seen during the
last minute of that time in perched in alder,
then hovering in air for awhile, but then
in just below nest, short bands which came
like frantic, & then dwelt, and rest. Facing
somewhat NW &. Fly out left's head - hunched
in nest raised head & beak at L of 60 degres - more
head slightly from side to side. Stayed on nest 1/2 min.
& then off - again = NW & down. Reappeared at
11:58 in scrub oak S.E first tree. Perched & wiped
beak, straightened feathers. Up about 6 inches, changed
direction, now facing NE & pumped & cleaned beak.
High in alder. spread tail & wings, cleaned neck;
Elyc'd nest & fed young. Surfacing a walk E of S.
