June 26 Mina Sol de Hor Calmelli, Baja California
passed them when we had passed about twenty feet and the mine became dark. At 50 feet (approx) from the entrance a small side passage occurred in which two Choeronycteris mexican were seen, one of which was obtained. Two more were obtained at the blind end of the main tunnel about 100 feet from the entrance. The tunnel was small, of about 5 ½ feet in height and about 4 feet wide throughout its extent. It contained only one side passage of any importance and turned at right angles to its left about 20 feet from its end.
We departed for Arroyo San Luis.
June 27 Arroyo San Louis, 800 ft, 9 mi W. Calmelli, Baja Calif.
For description of mine see pgs 138-141 of Journal.
Arrived here yesterday afternoon. Minimum temperature last night was 50° F.
Arroyo San Louis is a large sand wash flowing from the direction of Calmelli towards the plain at the foot of the mountains, roughly ENE by WSW. At the point where the mine is located the wash leaves the rocky lava hills and flows out onto the plain west of them. A truly surprising amount of game occurs at this location which is densely covered with cactus and leafed vegetation.
Birds seen here: Plumbeous quailcalky, Barn
