Oct. 7 Loni E Wedderburn, 50 feet elev., Curry Co., Oregon
at levels above that of the flood plain. Birds
present in the willows and alders were Parus
atricapillus, Corthylis calendula, Spinus pinus,
low
and some parulid. In the thickets of dead
brush and blackberry, Meloepiza melodica was
fairly common; one Thryomanes bewicki and
one Troglodytes troglodytes were also noted in this
habitat. Junco oreganus was present in open areas
bordering thickets.
In the mixed forest vegetation on the
slopes above the flood plain were noted
Cyanocitta stelleri, Regulus satrapa, Dryobates
villosus, Colaptes cafer, Troglodytes troglodytes,
Chamaea fasciata (in tall dense Ceanothus brush
in an opening among trees along a road), and
probably Parus refescens. One scrub-jay was seen
flying high from the edge of such a mixed forest
down into some Eucalyptus trees. A flock of
ravens was observed soaring over open grassy
slopes to the west of the forest area. Also,
in the draws of this open area there is a dense
vegetation from which, and also from patches
of chaparral on the lower slopes of the hills,
Russell has today obtained five specimens of
the scrub-jay. The scattered patches of chaparral
consist mainly of Corylus, but mixed in are
Symphoricarpos, Rosa Rubus, and Rhus diversiloba,
with a fern (Polystichum) growing everywhere
