Clangula hyemalis
21 July Barrow, Alaska - a few birds seen in the water
along the ice on Elson Lagoon and a few birds
flying along the Chuckchi Sea. One dead bird
found on the beach ridge.
24 July These seen all along Chuckchi Sea except 3 in VOTI
Creek.
25 July Flocks of up to 25 in the larger lakes South of Ikhrovil
but very few on a around small pool, these mostly females.
The lakes were 100 feet and the birds stayed fairly well out.
A nest with 5 eggs was found on a relatively dry mound
of peat. The & sat until we were about 7 feet away,
then went off silently. The nest was straw-lined with little
feathering, and the eggs pale than a steller's eider.
29 July A group of 73 near the ice on Elson Lagoon opposite
Wohlslag, of about as many 73 as 45s and 17
on Holmes's Horas near the larger pools at the SE
end, where it may have a nest. The flock of the
water was rather noisy.
