10 June Barrow, Alaska - 125+ birds were seen flying over
the ARK area about 8PM from west to east;
they were well up in the area, about 1/2P's,
and not paired in the V they formed. The Vs were
close together
of 20+, 2 of 10, 1 of 3, and the rest in a long
W-shaped line; there was a tendency for pairs of one
sex to congregate in the lines and the flock sounded
like Brant in the distance.
11 June saw a flock of about 75 flying east about 9PM and a
group of 15 unidentified ducks, prob. this species, about 7PM.
17 June flock of 125+ seen flying E along the ice
in the evening about 430PM.
18 June flock of 100+ flying E along the beach about 500PM
19 June Saw a pair flying E low over the VOTB area
in the late evening; during the afternoon heard
3-5th flocks of ducks, probably this species, flying
high over the cloud cover.
20 June. 4 birds were found in a pond between St
M Salt lagoons, where they remained all afternoon.
When 1st found a little courtship was seen, involving
head nodding and his usual flight calls. One
of these birds, a ? , is still in transition from white
to summer plumage and really looked odd. Adding,
