Benedetto 1965 Somateria spectabilis 8 July Barrow, Alaska - where it dipped for food items and two flocks of about 25 ducks were seen flying NW along Family wagon. 12 July A flock of about 125 8's seen flying W over the hub area in the late afternoon. 16 July About 4 flocks of ~ 100 evers seen flying west along Elson wagon. There were 10-2 8's in each flock and one 8 in advanced eclipse was seen at flying; rest were in good plumage. 17 July A flock of 125±25 flew over the lab.; mostly birds in normal plumage. 20 July Several good sized flocks seen near creek camp in the evening. 21 July They are commuting past in good #s, and have changed from somewhat as there are a few mixed (with molliissima) flocks. A few -365- 8's were seen and some of the 8's have pretty clifty heads. 25 July Two and probably 3 8's seen, one along the west border of the large lake south of Irvovish and two with a flock of Steller's in a small lake near the old gas well. They were not strongly banded and the face was lighter than the crown; the frontal shield was moderately long. 26 July 2 8's in a pool near line III A. 27 July Those seen flying east; some sides for out going west 28 July Tried to photograph a 8 along the edge of the Chuckchi' sea, where it was diving for food. 29 July A few (3-4 8's) on the ice at Elson wagon. Most in flocks going over. Not more than 5% #s.
