Somateria spectabilis
King Eider
11 June Barrow, Alaska, - a flock of about 25 eiders, all the males of which I identified over this species, flew west over the Ark area about 9 PM. About 2/3 of the flock was of all-brown colored birds.
12 June saw a flock of 30+ drakes flying W from the Central Meadow to the Ark area about 9 AM and a flock of 125+ flying east over the UTH area about 8 PM, both groups entirely or all of 80's.
13 June a flock of 25, about 1/2 80's seen flying east over the lavel area about 10:30 AM, and a flock of 12, 1/2 80's, seen flying SE over South Salt Lagoon about 2:30.
21 June a single drake was closely approached as it slept on the snow in a pool at the NW end of H Salt Lagoon and a pair, probably this species, was seen flying E over the S part of H. Salt Lagoon. The 8 of the pair was definitely this genus and appeared to have a dark back.
26 June 10's flying SW over the W part Central Marsh with a flock of Old squaw.
27 June 7 flying W then W from over Family Lagoon; I looked a little duck speckled on its breast.
29 June A flock of 30+ 8's seen flying W over Nicomet Island in the evening.
