P. De Benedictis 1965 So materia hischeri 29 July Barrow, Alaska - found 47s, one with 4 young in a large pond grown with a tall red grass so as to hide the birds when they were in it. The 4 young were difficult to see as they stayed very close to one of the 4s and swam in a [illegible] or [illegible] formation. They appeared ducks. The other 34s stayed in the pool but did not remain near the young once flushed. They looked like the other sides of this genus when in flight, the facial pattern being difficult to see. The field guide marks are not very good as the spectacled effect was all but nil. The bill shape was easy to see; the head was [illegible] than the [illegible], which was finely scaled by coarse blackish crescents and the head pattern was:
