o.k.
22 July ♀ in VOTH slough.
23 July ♀ sitting on nest on Pitelka's plot.
24 July ♀ on 6 egg nest (see 14 July), ok. when approach see
got up and noisily tried to lead me away, almost
giving a broken wing at feet - the wings were
flapping in a circular motion as the bird ran off in
a crouch. Later she only ran off, gawking, and
flew when we got close, but only short distance.
25 July Two flocks of about 13 females and several groups
of 2-4 were seen in the area between Ikrovaik and
Sengovada. They preferred small pools with grassy bottoms
and fed along the edge.
27 July 3 ♀s seen along the Chukchi sea in the evening, flying east.
29 July ♀ gone from Pitelka's plot and the rest flying
scattered cell over the area. A ♀ with 5
downy young on a pool in the SE part of Holme's
Morass. The ♀ kept them in the tall grass where
they were hard to see. The young stayed near the ♀
but ducked up behind her when she swam. The
young were very dark gray and had a little light
coloration about the eye like the ♀s do, but proportionately
longer in area.
