P. DeBenedictis 1965 Polysticta stelleri 4 July Barrow, Alaska These sew were in loosely associated pairs except 24% in S Meadows Lake; they were seen in the VOTH area, VOTH slough and the area around Meadows Lakes. 5 July Only one pair seen in Central Marsh; they are scattered in the VOTH area. In the evening a $ was seen dipping for food in a pool about 6-8" deep. 6 July A pair in a small pool at the north interest may be in- dicative of the progress of the season. The $ was almost 30 feet from the % when I approached and flushed, landing close to the %, which began chasing the % away. The % occasionally tried to retaliate but was always beaten back by the %. The fight consisted of irregular alternat- ion of "head ups", a change in which the head was thrown down and forward and the wing was slightly opened [sketch of two ducks] and a bathing motion in which the % was thrown over the bird's back with a circular motion of the 1/4 opened wings while the attacking bird moved towards the other. They were silent. 2 other pairs were seen along Holmes's Heron and one in Central Marsh; of each the member of its pair were not closely associated. 7 July A pair closely associating in pools near AACs and 2 $ in the VOTH area. 8 July None of those seen today were in pairs, but rather as widely dispersed individuals. %'s not noted in VOTH area.
