P. De Benedicts 1965 Polystichus stelleri 21 June Barrow, Alaska - this week; sometimes Steller was thrown down at the bottom of the water. This was often mixed with patting motions and done by 8s + 4s and on and off the water. The alert posture is: [sketch of bird] and they have a coat-like changing posture given by birds in flocks; 8s to 8s, 10 8s, and vice versa; some classes were fairly extended. The only noise heard was a short warbled-like 'quack' from 8s and a whistle from the wings when they flew. 22 June 9 pairs and 2 8s were seen near Britton's area - 4 pairs in the low area N of the Beach Ridge, 2 pairs + 2 8s in a pool S of the Beach Ridge and 3 pairs flying over. Then group of 28s + 48s was continually harassed by jays, the jays forcing them to dive until the flock flew off and returned to the same pool, where on the whole thing was repeated twice. Seen this yesterday as well; the scaring display is given by both genders in what appears to be an aggressive connotation, usually when another pair moves close in. It usually takes its form on the water: [sketch of two birds] 23 June a lone 8 seen flying W over the barrell area and a 84 seen flying W over the S part Family logoon; 2 pairs of riders (5p3) seen over both sloughs as well.
