P. DeBenedictis 1965 Polybitta stelleri 19 June Barrow, Alaska - affairs were scariest by a flooded trough between S. Salt & Family Lagoon. They allowed approach to about 100 feet Then took off, slowly after they returned and landed somewhere out of sight. The P is about all dark & has a heavy profile to the head trail. The male was very white on the sides, the chestnut showing only when the bird faced its head on and the green on the head was not noticeable. From the back it looked white headed and had 2 white stripes along the scapulars; the black collar spots in the flanks were conspicuous. 20 June After Four pairs were seen flying out of H. Salt Lagoon (S. End) about 2:30 p and a group of 10-72 was seen over the 60th area about 4:30. Shortly after a group the same size (6-54) landed in a pool where the Oldsquaw had spent the afternoon; Spain soon left but one remained behind, the P of which was chased by an Oldsquaw; when the flock landed they went through bathing marshes, some which appeared to be fertilized. 21 June All birds seen landed and the most in sight at one time was 6 pairs. They often landed in very small pools and several were seen to haunt bits on the shore. The amount of chestnut underneath is very variable.
