Anas acuta 9 June Meade River Coal Mine. 150°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska a small group in the lake behind camp and later 4-5's flew in. A couple of pairs near the Meade River pools in twice jams but no longer on the village flats, groups of 3's very noisy. Dubbling in the shallows pools. A male around the census plot and a couple of pairs elsewhere. 10-11 June Scattered in shallow pools and lakes, dabbling on the bottom. 2-3 x as many 3's at 9-8/11. Birds not so conspicuous behind the kitchen now that the big shallow lakes are opening up. 12 June Now mostly in the shallows of lake Agassiz. Many more 3's than 4's. A 3 over the census plot in the evening. 16 June Several groups of males about, some of which have lost its central tail feather. Only 2-3 3's seen. Mostly in the large shallow lake basin now. One 3 on the census plot. 17 June Absent from the village flats in the A.M.- only 3's seen. Kay found a nest on the far side of the Meade River. 18-19 June 1 lone and small groups of 3's flying over. 20 June 2-3 3's in the polygonal area NW of the village. 21 June 1 over the census plot in the A.M.. A dead, eaten adult and a egg-shell, probably this species, found there. One 3 along the river in the evening. 23 June At least two 3's and 4-6 3's on lake Agassiz, feeding in water 8-10 inches deep and grass
