Phalaropus fulicarius
23 June Weacle River Cool Mire. 15°20'25"W, 70°29'41"N, Alaska
Several 4's or Cake Agassiz. One 4 seen trying
to drive a 4 away. When he flew after her, she
would take off head and tail down and the
wing noise was very loud - when she took off
the back feathers were strongly shuffled. A group
of 4's seen together out in the centre of the lake,
and several 4's are still associated in this
region. Found one nest with 4 eggs in the
marshy area between the two lakes.
25 June Very inconspicuous and no groups, though 2 lone
birds were seen associating with flocks of Northern
Phalaropes. A 4 collected was very excited and
kept jumping up out of a pond settling the already
cell rapidly. The flight was fluttering and its legs
damaged. A 4 4 4 was feeding along the edge of the pool,
and after it left, the 14 4 quieted down. The 4 collected
was alive, and appeared to have completed a clutch
but looked like she may have been ready to go again.
2 follicles definite, but 2-3 days old, and several regressed
over a very old follicle. The oviduct probably not now
functional.
26 June One nest on the plot robbed, but a 4 still in the
area. No 4's seen. A few lone birds flying
down.
27 June A couple of 4's in the plots across the weir,
from corner, feeding along the edge of the large
