Phalaropus fulicarius 9 June Meade River Coal Mine, 157025'W, 70024'N, Alaska In the every groups of 1 to 8, near ~6, birds stailed flying over going SE. Flew if any landed. Very noisy, mostly by "pish" and the "whewr" call. many #'s in the flanks. Big migration 15? 10 June A few in the pools around here and in the clear parts of the Steele River. More #s than yesterday but scarce enough that seldom 8's are together. Very noisy. Birds seen on the goon usually out in the clouds. Not much spinning seen. 11 June This the only "common" shorebird seen. There are a few in every body of water free of ice, but never lots together. Many #'s. They seem to like ice free pools. One pool where water 8" deep had 6720 temp 90C. Saw several birds dipping for food at the bottom of shallowers even but the only thing seen on the water is a small fly that skins along its surface. Little sign migration in last two days. 12 June Do. Only birds seem to feed are in the Casey pools. Didn't see any courtship. 16 June Seem to be scarcer now than before I left. There were hardly any in evidence in the lake basin south of south ridge but better activity along the W side of L. Agassiz. Saw one copulation and the #'s obviously associated. Most birds in the pools. A # on the canoe plot, at my approach, flew to a bare ridge and crouched.
