P.D.Benedictis 1965 Red Phalarope 24 July Barrow, Alaska - then as the third chick approached would get up and hood it alone; the chick would stay still then begin to move to the male, which got up and went back to the two. This was repeated when the 4th chick came in from 40 feet away. The male would stand very upright when the chicks approached and the chicks pushed under the male from the front. While this was going on I was able to take several photo- graphs at 7 feet focus and 16 ft at 4½ feet; but I was afraid it flew off only when I moved suddenly away. The chicks are more boldly patterned in that the streaks of light and dark color are solid and their legs are pink. 25 July Birds were widely spaced in the grassy flats around the large lakes in the Ittoqqortoormiit region. No flocks, but often 2-4's feeding together, and no 8's seen. Male continually jumped up from in front of the weasel but only one nest was located - this with 4 eggs at the end of Ittoqqortoormiit - although little effort made to do so. 29 July a flock of about 15's on a small pool just south of Wahlsehleg slough. Several groups of 3-5's seen and it looks like the 8's are now beginning to flock up
