Red Phalarope
21 June Barrow, Alaska - Saw an attempted mounting.
The \ showed over the \ silently, feet dangling, for 10 seconds. The \ wouldn't let it mount, pecking at the \ and closed it off giving a few soft, quiet "ket" notes. Both saw a male ? (comet) a female; it ran around in front of the \ making soft peeks at the \s forehead and auricular region until the \ sat down. A 2nd \ came by and worked the 1st \ on the head & flew off; the \ then repeated its pecking and the pair sat side by side. When the \ sat she assumed a sleeping posture. In contrast to the other shorebird species they are more numerous today than yesterday, most in troughs in a high polygon area by trap wires III A+B. They feed in the water or along the edge in very saturated areas by pecking for food items. Its color is quite variable in plumage.

23 June Birds seen in the micomet area helped with pecking motions and stayed in very wet areas, either pools where they swam & spun or shallowly flooded areas where they walked about clumsily searching for & pecking at
