P. de Benedetti 1965 Red Phalarope 11 June Barrow, Alaska. - Saw 2 birds, one still with white on the belly, flying to the east from Family hogoon about 4:30. Fassler saw 2 white-bellied shorebirds that sounded like this species. About 7:34 saw a flock of 5 flying east over the haul area, all in good plumage. 12 June 2 birds seen flying east along the Beach Ridge about 2PM. 13 June one pair seen in puddles in high polygonized area; they fed in the water and just dipped the beak into the water as single motions without spinning and the feeding motions; they flew around a lot and seemed quite nervous; Once I seen feeding out in the grass 14 June Saw at least 3 pairs in rain puddles along the shore of Elson hogoon between Stepped Woldslog Doughs; they fed in the puddles and picked for food items near the surface of the water. 19 June At least 6-7 birds were seen for the area between S. and Middle Salt hogoons, mostly flying over; a few landed in a near pools and fed. No obvious display, the notes heard being primarily the sharp "neet" call note. 20 June A number of birds seen today including one in more winter than summer plumage and more 73's than 65's. Still social, often 2-383's in a flock. They have a "zweet" call in flight rather reminiscent of a Hutton's Vireo and feed almost exclusively in puddle.
