Lobipes lobatus
16 June Meade River Camp Mine. 15°02'5"W, 20°29'N, Alaska
A ? in the ponds behind the camp and 1 or two along
the shore of Lake Agassiz. Very inconspicuous and
evidently localized now. All out in pools.
17 June Birds in the pools, as Phalaropes, seem to have
trouble getting food. Seen along the west
side Lake Agassiz (2 ?) and behind camp (?).
Steele got a ? on the far side of the Meade 2 mi.
N of camp. Very scarce.
18-19 Jun Still a few about camp.
22 June One seen flying through camp - the 1st noted in
some time.
23 June A group of 2?s and a ? and later 4?s were
seen Lake Agassiz, usually out in very open areas,
and doing very little feeding. No indication of
associated pairs. But the little fleeting flight
of Red Phalaropes, given by the ? with 2?s. They
are now calling its "pith" note heard on migration
in Calif., and the "blackbird calls" were noted
only from one ?.
25 June Birds seem well in flocks, all ?s, and very active.
One flock of 5 with a Red Phalarope, seen at a distance,
and probably increased to become 8, from which 2
post-breeding ?s starting the post-nuptial molt
were collected. They had not been feeding much.
The flock seemed to prefer very open patches of water
when it landed.
