hinnodromus scolopaceus
30 May Meadele River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°59'N, Alaska
One flying N along the river and swinging
loudly and two flying S along the river,
giving the "Kook" call, were [illegible] noted.
3 or 4 birds flew over the camp area 4-5 PM.
all singing in complete songs.
31 May Heard at least one near the village this AMo and
saw 1 or 2 over camp shortly afternoon. 2 and later one
seen flying over the "census plot" area, singing a,
they were. Have yet to see one on the ground.
2 June Finally saw birds on the ground! They pote away
at the ground, but don't make much progress sings
everything below the moss is frozen! They seem to
prefer the ridges of the low polygons (the center
are mostly snow covered) where there is much
moss but one pair was seen along the creek in
a sandy flat. There is much song from birds flying
over and not seem to be in pairs or in 8's.
The estimates of 5 birds seen. Today is minimal. No
ground display noted. A few birds heard flying over
in its afternoon and evening,
3 June Finally got one of these buggers but it's not going
[illegible] to make much difference. They seem to be
paired and usually fly about in pairs. They
feed mostly on very disturbed areas. The one
I got had been feeding on a mound of coal,
with a little hay, which sled dogs had been
kept about 4 days ago. They are always noisy.
