P. De Benedich's
1965
Limnodromus scolopaceus
5 July Barrow, Alaska - There were only about 30 in VOTH
slough this morning, and other than 1 short partial song
and a few keek notes they were quite silent. They
fed mostly in the creek. In the afternoon several small
groups (up to 10) were seen in Central Marsh
near Pitelka's plot but no calling was heard aside
than the "keek" note when the flocks flew. A few
solitary birds but most were quite social, and
those in Central Marsh were with Plovers.
6 July There are probably as many in Central Marsh as ever,
for the group along the SW end is still there in addition
to a group of ~ 20 at the NE end and a few isolated
individuals. The small flock at the NE end got up once
and circled the marsh a couple of times and landed
again, giving the "keek" note while in flight.
Heard 3-4 bursts of song, one which might be diagonal
-- my ______
and lasted about 1 second. Isolated
song elements usually are at terminal trill only.
7 July A pair seen in Micronat Marsh, one of which gave the
terminal trill to the song, in the morning. Heard some
song from VOTH slough and Dr. P. Pitelka flushed about 20-25
from this area.
8 July A group of about 40 still present in VOTH slough. No song.
We found several series of holes in the marsh, all in bare
spots between clumps of grass, which we believed to be made by
Dowitchers. The proportion of 9's in the group seems to be
fairly large.
