Calidris alpina
30 June Meade River Cold Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska
Found them.
1 July Not seen at all in the Village flat- sillage
dune area, nor in the region by North dunes.
3/July A ♀ (~2 birds) near the 5.5 marker of the
Census plot seem strongly attached to the area,
not flushing when I got near them. When approached
they give a harsh loud, "dareepp!" call
and go into an alert posture. When not alarmed
they are often in the Eriophorum areas where it is
fairly dry and sneak around, apparently surface
feeding. When they arrived later this at Buretto
last year, they usually had chicks. Couldn't get
them to brood, or find any sign of nest.
4 July There were 3 or 4, probably 1, pairs in this area
just E Spiles lakes by the census plot. The first two
were just beyond Smith Ridge, where they were
out in a flat, almost dry Eriophorum area, and
feeding around the clumps of Eriophorum when
they weren't scolding us. The next pair was near the
golden flowers, and one birds became very excited
and gave a call like a little rail, from a rail-like
posture, and sounding like it was chokkeep.
The other bird rose in an upright and gave a
loud "dareepp" call
occasionally. There
were two on the census
plot near the 5.5 post
