Calidris alpina - 6 16 June Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska Still obviously present at the South end of Lake Agassiz and N of South ridge. No aerial song. Birds here at Barrow beginning the primary molt. 3 birds on the census plot, certainly one pair which is found somewhat to the north. 17 June At least one pair at the SW part of Lake Agassiz, awetis on the ridge to Lake Itkmakrak, and 2 mi's N camp. One on the far side of the Meade. No feathers seen. 18 June A pair near the village in the S. Haye plot, both with signs of primary molt. 19 June A pair on the census plot acting like they had a nest, but wouldn't set. Both with primary molt. When they flew off together, the 7 sang. Later a little song at 6.6 stakes. At least two pairs on the bluff 2 mi. S of camp on the far side of the Meade River. One bird followed me around as I strolled it, staying just off shot strange the whole time, and never appears to feed. 20 June At least two pairs between the village and Lake Knud, judging from the still aerial display heard, but none on the ground. 21 June At least two pairs on the census plot area but none seen on the ground. A pair between the two lakes on the W boundary of the plot. 26 June A pair on the census plot, but no evidence of a nest.
