Calidris alpina - 5
8 June Meade River Coal Mine, 15°02'W, 70°24'N, Alaska
Certainly came off a nest, which I couldn't find.
Not as conspicuous near the village as earlier and
apparently spreading out more; birds not seen feeding.
A little song heard.
9 June One of 2 pairs along the creek and 3 pair behind
the village. Many birds seen in the late A.M. sitting
on the polygon ridge but not feeding. Considerable
conspicuousness in the village but little prolonged song.
Only 1/2 on the village flats now. This species does not
seem to be very common. Much song at and beyond
the 5,6 stake of the census plot. The pair not in
the area where I thought the nest was earlier,
and only 1-2 pairs on the plot - low density.
10 June Probably a pair on the census plot but most of
its noise coming from the village and from
the area SW of the census plot. Not much activity
and I don't see them on the ground very often.
11 June Only two pairs seen along south ridge, one bird
collected, which could have a mist now. A little
song from the dues on the far side of its headed K.
Orbou. The bird collected today had a BIG color-
pilar and a tipulid in its gullet. They are really
severe!
12 June A 3 near the 1st lake of village creek. 1 or 2 pairs
pully on the census plot but little activity there.
Some singing from the south, as usual. Not at
all as common here as at Barrow.
