Culicidus alpina -4
5 June Pleade River Coal Mine, 157°025'W, 70°29'N, Alaska.
The pairs are closely associated and the tail-up, 2-
wing-up ground display occasionally seen, though
old, impaired birds are present. Saw some birds
plucking bloodpatches. There are about 3? in the
camp area and there seem to be most numerous
near the village. Few long bouts of song,
possibly because they come in so slowly that local
birds are well established territorially before
new ones arrive. Seldom see them with pectorals,
as they are now in more exposed and after degree
areas. Not sure, however, just how three two pairs
will divide the area up.
6 June Little change near camp. One long chase + fight
with 3 birds involved, much wing-up display.
Birds active about camp feeding in saturated
moist areas and in the disturbed areas near the
village. Seldom see them around Carr's pools
as are the Semipalm. No evidence of migrants.
Birds quiet due to weather.
7 June Dunlin were seen along the village creek and
the village flats, and along the shore of Itwakale lake,
with much chasing in the latter area. No long song
bouts. Birds not in the Carr's marshes to any great
extent but in over nearby areas with more a few pairs.
8 June 1-2 pairs near the census plot. Occ. feeding
in high polygonal areas and on the tops of pond margin.
Flushed a bird N of the census plot that almost
