Calideis alpina -2
2 June Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska
Bros between grass tufts below, in the dumps of grass
themselves, and are reticuled to the high areas
considered to the melt patterns. Most of this feeding
effect appears to be subsurface but is limited by
the shallowness of the thaw. There is little ground
display, the birds being very sociable, and
the only song heard was near the village, this
given only for a short period in the A.M. In the
evening there were a few birds in the "clear plot"
area 50f camp, not lone or in pair and
giving the impression that they are looking the
place over where land is being exposed. There
was a flock of 6 on the plot along the ridge when
I returned, feeding in the many areas along
the edges of polygons.
3 June No Hoops seen the A.M. A pair along the
creek and 1-2 behind the village. two
pairs in the flats N of the village. Very noise
but little prolonged song. Most appear to be
mated the the pairs stick close together. They

vegetation is low and there is more on the ground.

and fly off 50 to 100 yards; sometimes they give
the alarm "weeatt weeatt" note. There were 2-3
