Calideis alpina -2 2 June Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska Bros between grass tufts below, in the dumps of grass themselves, and are reticuled to the high areas considered to the melt patterns. Most of this feeding effect appears to be subsurface but is limited by the shallowness of the thaw. There is little ground display, the birds being very sociable, and the only song heard was near the village, this given only for a short period in the A.M. In the evening there were a few birds in the "clear plot" area 50f camp, not lone or in pair and giving the impression that they are looking the place over where land is being exposed. There was a flock of 6 on the plot along the ridge when I returned, feeding in the many areas along the edges of polygons. 3 June No Hoops seen the A.M. A pair along the creek and 1-2 behind the village. two pairs in the flats N of the village. Very noise but little prolonged song. Most appear to be mated the the pairs stick close together. They show little preference in feeding except that the vegetation is low and there is more on the ground. They feed most with rapid jab, molluscs. When I try to get close to them, they become very alert and usually stop feeding, watch me awhile and fly off 50 to 100 yards; sometimes they give the alarm "weeatt weeatt" note. There were 2-3
