Branta nigricans
14 June Barrow, Alaska. - found a group of 1
and at least 3 scattered pairs along the
shore of Elson Lagoon south of Skipik Slough.
The 1st pair were in a grassy, melt pond & the other
were near or on patches of grass surrounded by
snow. They were silent and not much less
approachable than in Maine Co. All appeared to be paired.
20 June a flock of about [illegible] seen flying W over S tower,
The Barrow area about 5 PM, circling as if they
wanted to land, but they didn't.
21 June Two pairs in a gravel area near open waters at the
S end of Mt. Salt Lagoon.
24 June flock of 4 pairs south of Wohlenschlag Slough in
the afternoon.
27 June group of 3 seen flying W out of the polygonal
area by lines EHA-B, silent except for an occasional
"harrnt" call.
6 July a single bird seen in a pond along Elson Lagoon
not far from where McClees found a nest yesterday.
10 July Found the nest, which I photographed. The brooding
bird was wary but did not get far away from us.
The nest was well lined with down and the eggs were
shockingly white compared to the other birds here.
11 July a flock of 5 seen flying E over Footprint Lake.
16 July The nest still old but down is becoming scattered
around the area. The 1st is shyer now and gets off
its nest on long, distant approach.
21 July The Brant #2 nest broken up, all egg eaten.
