P. DeBenedictis 1965 Calidris alpina 20 July Barrow, Alaska - Most birds seen were on Gathline Ridge, south of the Trapline and acted like they had young in nests. No song but still considerable parachuting and taila. 21 July At least 3 on Pitelka's Plot, one not seen and two [illegible] but not associated with a flock of golden plovers. Not many along Elm hayrorn and the N most nest was empty. 22 July Two pairs that acted like they had young were found at the west end of line III. At one time all 4 gave distraction displays and they gave the loud call that seems to mean - "chance, don't move chick!" but no chicks could be found. They fed in grassy areas which were wet near three polygon (ridges) where they were 1st seen, and the two pairs were not closely associated. 23 July A lone bird seen in low, moderately wet grass on the AE edge of Central Marsh. The USCTGS nest empty. 24 July Only one pair noted near Line III. There were about 3 pairs on the flats across (out of) 150TH creek from the Voth area. I several times jumped birds that looked like they were brooding circulatig beet found not young in nests and we've got as strong a alarm reaction (no distraction display) as I have sometimes in the past. None these birds was my impression based forth on the behavior and spacing of the birds that they were breeders with chicks. Heard 3-5 parachute trills.
